When people buy Avon Jewellery little do they realise that the company was founded in 1888 by a door to door bookseller.

This bookseller used to give away rose oil perfume to encourage women to buy his books.

It wasn’t long before he discovered that the perfume was more popular than his books.

So the California Perfume Company was founded selling five floral fragrances together with other essentials. All items were sold with an unconditional money back guarantee.

The first representative, Mrs P.F.E. Albee of Winchester, New Hampshire, was hired in 1886 to help develop the early sales technique that has become the foundation of this global business. Mrs Albee sold products and recruited other women as agents.

Over the next 10 years the company grew and a brochure was introduced.

The California Perfume Company was incorporated on January 28, 1916 by David H. McConnell and Alexander D. Henderson in Suffern, New York. By 1918, five million units were sold in North America, and by 1928, sales reached $2 million.

During a visit to England, McConnell was struck by the beauty of the countryside surrounding Stratford-on-Avon, and introduced a product line called Avon comprising a toothbrush, talcum powder, and vanity set.

In 1939, the company’s name was changed to Avon Products Inc. The company was taken public in 1946. By 1954, sales reached $55 million, and the "Ding – Dong Avon Calling" advertising campaign introduced.

Avon today is the world's leading direct seller of an extensive range of products including make-up, skincare, fragrance, jewellery, lingerie, personal care, accessories and gifts.

Although the company has always been more directed toward female customers, Avon's line of male products continues to expand, and its children's products (such as shampoos and toys) have also proved successful.

They reach women in over 120 countries through over 5.8 million independent sales Representatives.

Avon's fastest growing markets today are in China and Russia.

It's evolving product lines include make-up, bath and skin lotions, anti-ageing cream, perfumes, as well as jewelery and clothing.

Avon Cosmetics UK sells more lipstick, nail enamel, eye-make-up, fragrance and skincare than any other brand, according to independent market researchers TNS. One in three women in the UK is a customer.
