The cheapest suppliers will help you reduce gas bills and save on gas. (UK ONLY)

Can you really reduce gas bills and is it worth it?

Who are the best gas suppliers?

And who are the best gas and electric suppliers?

It is a good idea to switch

if you never have done so before - or it’s been awhile.

 It’s easy and simple.

Growing numbers of customers are switching suppliers for cheaper deals (which is good) but the risk is that the new supplier will raise prices, too.

You cannot very easily tell which supplier is cheapest by doing a search online. Sometimes the catch is in order to get the discounts, you have to agree to a lock-in clause. So when the cost increases you want to switch away from them in the future, you’re charged a fee. Many people regret having moved to a cheaper deal only to find when it ends; they have been dumped on to expensive standard tariffs.

You might find the cheapest on the day you search, only for it to be the most expensive the day, week or month after you’ve switched to them.

Switching sites that allow you to compare energy suppliers are useful but sometimes they don't offer a fair comparison.

For example they may not point you to the cheapest because that company doesn’t pay them commission.

Then around every three to six months the gas companies have a round of price changes and your paying more than you did before you visited the switching site.

Also you don’t just want the cheapest price on the day but want good customer service. You should choose a supplier that ranks highly in customer satisfaction surveys.

British Gas for example does poorly in these surveys and is not consistently cheapest. The press comments on British Gas range from people being hounded for years for wrongly worked out bills to messing up 45,000 direct debits.

Not much wonder they get the wooden spoon award, suffer fines and see record amounts customers leaving them.

The 'Big Six' suppliers - British Gas Powergen, Npower, Scottish Power, EDF Energy and Scottish and Southern Energy dominate the market. But newer smarter suppliers can often offer better deals.

For example  the company I’m with  offers a unique ‘Triple Value’ Guarantee.
