Unlike the Nielsen survey, a study done for Shop.org found that free shipping is a big draw. About 61 percent of the shoppers said that free shipping without conditions is one of the promotions they would most like to see. "Free shipping offers drive online sales more than any other promotion," said a spokesman for Shop.org.

It is no wonder that the annual growth of online shopping is increasing year on year at an impressive rate.

According to Internet World Stats (http://www.internetworldstats.com/stats.htm) there are more than 1.1 billion people currently online, around the world in 233 individual countries.

Depending on where you get your information, global Internet sales exceeded $200 billion for the first time in 2006.

The man billed as Japan's answer to Richard Branson, who built the country's biggest e-commerce company, has launched his UK online shopping mall.

Hiroshi Mikitani, its founder and chief executive of Rakuten which is a phenomenon in Japan where it has annual sales of more than 800bn yen (£3.3bn). Its online site acts as a shop window for more than 20,000 Japanese retailers, selling everything from eggs to fine wines you can choose from some 10 million items. Rakuten does not hold any stock itself. It charges monthly fees to the merchants on its site and takes a cut of between 2 and 5 per cent on the value of any goods that customers buy.
